Following 2014’s Bury Me At Makeout Creek, Mitski delivers a powerful personal statement and establishes herself as a leading voice in indie rock with Puberty 2. This album continues from where its predecessor left off. Mitski describes it as “kind of a two parter,” noting that while it shares a similar sound, it represents a clear growth from that record. Musically, there are nuanced changes, with electronic drum machines underpinning Pixies-inspired guitar riffs, and the opening track features vibrant saxophone. “I had a certain confidence this time,” Mitski shares. “I knew what I wanted, knew what I was doing, and wasn’t afraid to try things that might not please everyone.”
Mitski asserts that “Happiness fucks you.” This theme has been woven into her gritty, outsider-indie style for years, but it resonates powerfully in Puberty 2. She reflects, “Happiness is up, sadness is down, but one’s almost more destructive than the other. When you realize you can’t have one without the other, you can end up spending moments of happiness just waiting for that next wave.” The tension in Puberty 2 is evident, portraying a beautiful yet brutal emotional landscape where this emerging artist finds her bold new voice.
Puberty 2 includes the singles Your Best American Girl and Happy.
A limited edition WHITE vinyl of the album was produced by Dead Oceans in 2024.
